The US Department of Justice has charged the founder and two top managers of SafeMoon, a cryptocurrency token that was once valued at over $8 billion, with fraud. The charges allege that the trio redirected millions of dollars from investors to buy luxury items for themselves. The Securities and Exchange Commission has also filed civil charges against the defendants for the alleged unregistered sale of SafeMoon tokens. SafeMoon promised investors that their funds were secure, but it was later discovered that the funds were not locked and the defendants had used the money to purchase expensive cars, go on lavish trips, and buy luxury homes. The value of SafeMoon dropped by over half after the charges were announced. One of the defendants has been arrested, while the others remain at large.
