China Accelerates Efforts to Replace Western Technology with Domestic Alternatives

China has increased its spending on replacing Western technology with domestic alternatives as the United States tightens restrictions on high-tech exports to its rival. The Chinese government, military, and state-linked entities have accelerated their efforts to replace computer equipment and are now targeting the telecom and financial sectors. The push for domestic technology is driven by both geopolitics and concerns about cyberattacks. China spent 1.4 trillion yuan ($191 billion) on replacing foreign hardware and software in 2022, a 16.2% increase from the previous year. However, analysts note that China’s lack of advanced chip-manufacturing capabilities impedes their ability to fully substitute foreign products. Despite the heavy spending on domestic substitution, foreign companies still dominate the banking and telecoms database management sectors. Financial institutions are also reluctant to switch database systems due to stability requirements.
