FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried testified in his fraud trial on Monday, claiming that he believed the cryptocurrency exchange was solvent when he tweeted “FTX is fine” just days before it declared bankruptcy in November 2022. Bankman-Fried argued that he did not mislead the public about the exchange’s health to slow customer withdrawals. He admitted to making mistakes that hurt FTX customers and employees but denied stealing customers’ money. Bankman-Fried also stated that an $8 billion liability did not alarm him, and the collapse of his hedge fund Alameda Research brought down the exchange because of heavy borrowing. Bankman-Fried’s decision to testify in his own defense is seen as a risky move, but he may view it as his best shot at countering testimonies from former colleagues who have cooperated with prosecutors.
