China’s Vice Minister of Science and Technology, Wu Zhaohui, will attend a global summit on artificial intelligence in Britain, according to sources familiar with the matter. The summit aims to address the risks associated with AI and build an international consensus on its safe development. China’s acceptance of Britain’s invitation signifies a thawing of relations between the two countries. Wu will be accompanied by representatives from the Chinese foreign ministry, companies, and academic bodies. China, like many other countries, has seen a surge in the popularity of generative AI and currently accounts for 40% of the global total of large language models.
