The amount of these payments has more than tripled since 2014. Google’s revenue from search advertising in 2021 was $146.4 billion, making the payments for the default setting its biggest expense. Google argued that these agreements are legal and necessary to maintain competition in the search and advertising businesses. The company also stated that users have the option to switch to another search provider if they are dissatisfied with the default setting. The numbers were revealed during the ongoing antitrust trial, despite Google’s objections.
