The US International Trade Commission (ITC) has issued an order that could potentially ban Apple from importing its Apple Watches due to patent infringement. The commission upheld a judge’s ruling that Apple violated medical technology firm Masimo’s patent rights in light-based technology for reading blood-oxygen levels. The ban is pending presidential review and possible appeals, with President Joe Biden’s administration having 60 days to decide whether to veto the import ban. Apple has the option to appeal the decision to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Masimo’s CEO stated that the decision sends a message that even the world’s largest company is not above the law. This case is part of an ongoing intellectual property battle between Apple and Masimo.
